Dental Fluorosis: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Dental fluorosis is a dental disease caused by the deposition of fluorides in the hard and soft tissues of the body. Fluorine is a mineral found naturally in all water sources including oceans. Research shows that fluoride not only reduces cavities in children and adults, but it also helps in curing early signs of tooth decay. But when there is an excess of fluoride in the body, it causes Fluorosis.

It is a health problem caused by excessive intake of fluoride through drinking water/food products / industrial pollutants over a long period. Taking excess fluoride affects teeth and bones. Dental Fluorosis / Dental Fluorosis affects children and causes teeth to fade and deform
Fluorosis is likely to occur if the amount of fluoride in the water is 3 - 5 ppm. High fluoride levels have been found in 230 districts in 20 states of India. Among these, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are the most affected states. Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra are moderately affected states while Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam are mildly affected states. Due to this, more than 62 lakh children in India suffer from fluorosis.
The Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission, launched by the Ministry of Rural Development, worked for the control of fluorosis through an awareness campaign from 1987- 1993. In 2008-09, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India launched a national program aimed at the prevention, diagnosis, and management of fluorosis in endemic areas.

  • The enamel ends its shine in the teeth and leaves white spots.
  • After some time these white spots become yellow and brown.
  • The enamel becomes weak and breaks.
  • Teeth become rough.

This is mainly due to the excess of fluoride in water. Also, a major cause of fluorosis is the overuse of fluoride-containing dental products such as toothpaste and mouth rinses. Sometimes, children taste the taste of toothpaste containing fluoride so much that they swallow it instead of spitting it out.
There are other causes of fluorosis. For example, it can occur in childhood by taking more than the prescribed amount of fluoride supplements. High amounts of fluoride-fortified fruit juices and soft drinks also cause this.

FLUOROSIS TREATMENT  - TREATMENT OF FLUOROSIS

Fluorosis only affects the appearance of teeth. It does not cause cavities. Hence most treatment of fluorosis involves removal of stain such as
  • Tooth whitening can be done to remove stains.

  • Crowns can be used.

  • MI paste, which is a calcium phosphate product, is sometimes used to reduce tooth discoloration.

HOW TO AVOID FLUOROSIS - PREVENTION OF FLUOROSIS 


  • If you use public water supply, ask your supplier about fluoride levels. If the quantity is high, do not use it for drinking.

  • Some foods and drinks contain fluoride. Fluoride is now added to some bottled water. Do not use them excessively.

  • At home, keep all fluoride-containing products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, and supplements out of reach of young children.
  • Do not use Flavor's toothpaste. Because young children swallow it because of their taste

  • If the teeth have started getting spots then go to the dentist.
