Know thyroid symptoms, causes and treatment

Do you feel very tired during the day? Have you started gaining weight suddenly, are you losing hair? If yes, your thyroid gland may also be a reason for this. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. This gland produces thyroxine hormone which controls the speed of our metabolism. It is also known as T4. The metabolism system helps the body to use energy.
Thyroid disease can slow or speed up metabolism by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormones. When the level of this hormone is very low or very high, it causes many problems.

The thyroid gland controls a feedback mechanism of the brain. When thyroid hormone levels are low, the hypothalamus in the brain produces a hormone called thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). This causes the pituitary gland to secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete more. Since the thyroid gland is controlled by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, disorders of these tissues can also affect the function of the thyroid and cause thyroid problems.
